Massage therapy is a wonderful way to manage stress, reduce pain, recover from sports injuries or trauma, and add to your overall wellness program. It's a time to allow your body to heal itself as it was always meant to do.
Therapeutic massage refers to a collection of techniques designed primarily to relax muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones, and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart. Therapeutic massage can relax muscles, increase circulation, remove metabolic waste products, help the recipient obtain a feeling of connectedness, a better awareness of the body and the way they use and position it. A variety of modalities may be used including: Swedish, Deep Tissue, Orthopedic Massage, Neuromuscular, CranioSacral, Myofascial Release, Reiki, and Reflexology.
The strokes and manipulations of Massage are each conceived as having specific therapeutic benefit. Therapeutic Massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissue of lactic acid, uric acid and other metabolic wastes. It improves circulation without increasing heart load. It stretches the ligaments and tendons, keeping them supple. Therapeutic Massage also stimulates the skin and nervous system while at the same time reduce emotional and physical stress and it is often recommended as part of a regular program for stress management. It also has specific clinical uses in a medical or remedial therapy.
There are situations in which caution should be taken when receiving therapeutic massage. It is generally agreed upon that persons with uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart disease, recent surgery or fractures, phlebitis, fever, and other problem conditions should consult their physicians for any restrictions before receiving a massage. In some cases, limited restrictions apply, and in rare cases, massage should be avoided altogether. If in doubt, check with your doctor.
